The Langston University Family mourns the passing of one of its most beloved members, President Emeritus Ernest L. Holloway. Through his unparalleled commitment and dedication, he left an indelible mark on the University that he so dearly loved. Forever will he live in the hearts and memories of those who knew him and in the annals of Langston University's rich and storied history. Our deepest sympathies are extended to his family during this time of bereavement. Please know that we, too, loved Dr. Holloway and are deeply saddened by his demise. We can all take comfort in knowing that, according to the scripture, "...to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord."

I feel so blessed to have taken time to go visit, pray and read scripture with Holloway in Sugar Land last week, Sunday-Wed, Dec 18-21, 2011. I remember the zodiac parties he had in the early 80's and remember he always had a smile. We do not know how blessed we were to have a President who we actually saw on a regular basis, but one who also took time to KNOW us..My first job in HIED as at LU...Ten years after I graduated, I came to LU to recruit for the graduate program at MIZZOU..during the luncheon Doc recognized me as an outstanding alumni..later I walked up to him and said..Dr Holloway do you really remember me?..he said."of course Ms Hill, you are from Muskogee, you majored in Broacast Journalism when you were here and now you are working on your PhD in Missouri.."..you could have knocked me over with a feather..Years later he allowed me to interview and shadow him..and even take a picture in his office.in the chair.. When I was at UNT, he came and spoke for me doing an event I hosted on Blacks in Higher Education...when he got done speaking..many of my colleages wanted to go and work at Dear Langston...and my students were just blown away...He instilled strong pride in us...and told us we were brillant..and that he expected nothing less than excellence..What a beautiful legacy to leave behind...to instill in the hearts and minds of thousands who stepped foot on "the yard"..he opened his heart, his office and his home to so many of us...thank you again..for sharing him...we love you and we love him..

Ernest, Reg, Norm….Langston University, the Langston\Oklahoma Family and those touched by Dr. Ernest Holloway Sr.’s leadership – literally around the world….. Words can not truly express the profound impact of a very great father, a great husband, a great leader, a dear brother, a dear friend and a profound spirit that found love, precious time and a kind word for all. I too was privileged to attend Langston University under the great leadership of Dr. Ernest Holloway. I was one of those few privileged students who on occasion that was invited to share not only in the university life under Dr. Holloway’s leadership, but in Holloway family gatherings, meals, memories and the laughter of the times, from Oklahoma to California. For many, Dr. Holloway was our Dr. Martin Luther King, our Justice Thurgood Marshall and our President Obama….and still is… If there is a university in heaven I’m sure that Dr. Holloway is busy leading, teaching, educating, tuning and changing spirits for a better universe… I am reminded of the final passage of a very powerful but very personal poem that Dr. Holloway would have been familiar with which is as follows… “TIRED MOMENTS FIND ME A DELIGHTFUL TREAT, HOURS OF SORROW, A SHRINE OF UNDERSTANDING, AT ALL TIMES I AM FAITHFUL TO THE CREED OF COMPANIONSHIP, TO A FEW, I AM THE CASTLE OF DREAMS, AMBITIOUS, SUCCESSFUL, HOPEFUL DREAMS. TO MANY, I AM THE POETIC PLACE WHERE HUMAN FEELING IS RHYMED TO CELESTIAL MOTIVES; TO THE GREAT MAJORITY, I AM THE TREASURY OF GOOD FELLOWSHIP.” “IN FACT, I AM THE COLLEGE OF FRIENDSHIP; THE UNIVERSITY OF BROTHERLY LOVE; THE SCHOOL FOR THE BETTER MAKING OF MEN. . .” I think this passage reflects but just a small portion of the spirit that was…. and is….. Dr. Ernest L. Holloway. Our condolences to the Holloway Family and treasured friends…..from the Williams Family….Bro. Bob, Mindy, Korey & Konnor Williams – (LU,OK\BK-A?A) Phx. AZ

MY FONDEST ADMIRATION OF DR. ALTHOUGH MANY YEARS OLDER THAN MYSELF, HE ALWAYS FLASHED THAT INFAMOUS SMILE WHEN HE SAW ME AND SAY,"I KNOW YOU ARE A WALLACE FROM IXL." I WILL TRULY MISS DR. HOLLOWAY. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Holloway family in the loss of Dr. Ernest L. Holloway Sr. He was a great man and pillar in the Langston Community. We have known him all our lives and looked up to him as the true Langston Lion. I had the opportunity of having Mrs. Holloway as an elementary teacher at the Laboratory school and Dr. Holloway as the President when I attended LU from 1978-82. He will never be forgotten. We used to talk in the Post office some days and he would talk about his grandchildren and called us his "chillun". We loved him but God loved him best. Be encouraged. Earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal! We'll miss you Dr. Holloway!!!!

Mr. and Mrs. Holloway were OUTSTANDING educators. People with genuine character will always make an impact that will long be remembered. It seems he traveled quite frequently, whether it was to represent the interests of the university, or attend the funeral of a deceased Langston graduate, or visiting alumni chapters all over the United States. Condolences to the family.
