Biography: Mrs. Portia Maedee Thompson passed from this life to her eternal rest on Wednesday, December 13, 2023. Portia was born June 27th, one hot and humid day with heavy rains in Wewoka, Oklahoma to her parents wed in holy matrimony; Johnny E. Thompson and Fannie M. Jackson-Thompson. Portia was educated in the Public School System of the town of Wewoka. Portia married Melvin L. Jackson in 1964 and moved to Shawnee, Oklahoma. The two welcomed their first child, MelVON Denise, the summer of 1965 on June 28th and their second child, Patrick Jeray, September 3, 1968. While the two divorced early, they together enjoyed the gift of grandchildren; Brandon and Majesty born to MelVON, and Sydney, Savannah, Patrick, John, Nicholas, Nathaniel, and Kaitlynn born to Patrick who are left to cherish her memory. Portia always had time to talk about her grands to anyone that would listen. I believe these were her proudest moments in life. She shared the love of the arts with each of these gifted beings, including the appreciation of music, sewing, dance, crafts, cooking, and among others that they will always remember. Portia was preceded in death by parents and siblings; Shirley, Jennone, Verletta, Veney, Johnny Jr, Vernita, Cheryl, and baby Larry. She leaves three siblings to cherish her memory; Randall of Colorado, Renae of Oklahoma City, and Winford of Tulsa, Oklahoma with a vast amount of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Portia was the neighborhood Licensed Cosmetologist as she’d “Doo” hair from home from the 1960’s through the 1980’s. She began her career position in the early 1970’s as a Certified Dietician for the Veterans Hospitals of Oklahoma City and later in Richmond, VA where she relocated in 1978 with her companion, Elmer, of 45 years. Portia taught Sunday School at Tabitha Baptist Church of Oklahoma City for many years and was a faithful choir member and was encouraged to be a soloist. Portia enjoyed seamstress work and took orders to make clothes, as well as the choir robes she made for the children’s and young adult choirs. Portia was a regular “Martha Stewart”, she could refurbish anything! She loved gardening and grew and maintained a beautiful vegetable garden that her neighbors and friends also partook of. She loved the piano and played by ear, but eventually learned to read music as well. Her innate ability to care for others will be missed. She will be missed. Special thanks to the Duke Hospice Team, Nurse Lauren and Nurse Jennifer, Monika Woodard, Debbie Taylor, Denise Wiggins, Melissa Southerland, Alexis Alston, devoted Majesty and Brandon (who cared for her many years after her daughters relocation), and her amazing, patient, son-in-love, Kevin “Dunkin”.
