I was a young first year white teacher In my first year of teaching seventh grade Art in 1971 at Moon Junior High at NE 11th & N Lindsay in Oklahoma City, OK. I had four outstanding teachers who helped with my success. The four black ladies who helped me were Mrs. Mildred Chandler, Mrs. Sylvia Emory, and Mrs. Marie Winston and Mrs. Ruth Allen. Also Vice Principal Mr. Charles Miles was a great asset to the whole school in acknowledging that “we are going to have school”! Mrs. Allen knew instinctively that I had some inflammation in my body – it was mononucleosis and an active pending caustic appendicitis. Which required that me to be in the hospital for one week and a month off of work during the month of October. She was always supportive, direct and did not care that I was a first year white teacher. She said they will do anything to get you off of the lesson so be prepared. The very next day a seventh grade girl A.J., who said at the beginning of a new lesson on “Color Schemes” And she raised her hand and said “Mr. Oden you have a hole in your sock”. I was able to respond after receiving Mrs. Allen’s coaching. So I responded like Mrs. Allen and I said “So what does that to do with the lesson”? Later I checked and I did not have a hole in my sock yet it was like my life passed before me when I was told that I had a hole in my sock. So tell us she would be asked “Why are you still teaching”? Mrs. Allen would respond “I rest and sit down every chance I get since I am 64” years of age. She was famous with all of the ninth grade students in English as she would tell the only American Indian student in Moon Jr. Hg. “C”. “Now child come up here and talk to me”. He would gladly come to the front of the room and sit on her lap as she would hold him for a few minutes and rock him. That was all that he needed and he could then go back to his desk and work. None of the other students would make fun of “C” or Mrs. Allen as they understood that she would give her time, teaching and concern for all of her students. These were very valuable lessons for me in my first year of teaching and at Moon the all black school. I regret that I did not get to share one on one with hear as Moon was closed and welded into the J.F. Kennedy Campus. She was such a stalwart leader in the community, the church, and the schools. I taught for 11 years and Mrs. Chandler, Mr. Miles and Mrs. Ruth Allen were my heroes then and now! So Thanks Again Mrs. Allen - I too - love you Mrs. Ruth Allen! My deepest sympathy to the Allen family. When I learned of her passing I thought of the Mrs. Allen I meet in the 8th grade. Little did I know then that she and all of the teachers that I was fortunate to have at Moon Jr. High were not only teaching their assigned subjects but they were an extention of our home training. Teachers and parents worked together to help the child be the best he/she could be. She was hard, firm and strict but always with love and compassion. She was truly one of a kind--the best. God bless you and comfort you is my prayer.
