Gordon had a difficult early life, attending many different boarding schools (averaged two a year) while his father ran a business in Davenport and then in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Later, Gordon studied at a number of military schools in Evansville, Wisconsin, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Claremore, Oklahoma, Tulsa University, Oklahoma State University in Okmulgee, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma Christian College. He worked in various places as a property caretaker and had a long stint working and living in El Reno, (Banner Road) where he enjoyed some independence and relaxation outdoors, working for Mary Ann Morgan and her father, Dr. Jack W. Balenseifen. During this time of his life, Gordon particularly enjoyed going with Dr. Balenseifen to secure “great” bargains in the markets they visited.
