J.C. was one of my first supervisors on OCPD in the early 80’s. He was a good supervisor and fun to work for. I missed him when he left the department.

It is so sad to hear when a trooper moves on, but left behind is a life of friends, family, and fellow Cav Troopers. When he walked among us we became better.

JOHN CHARLES WAS MY BEST FRIEND. WE MET IN THE KINDERGARTEN. HE KNEW THAT I WAS SHY SO HE USED TO WRITE NOTES TO THE GIRLS AND SIGN MY NAME JUST TO EMBARRASS ME. WE STAYED ON WALKER STREET IN SOUTHTOWN. SOUTHTOWN WAS AN IDYLLIC NEIGHBORHOOD IN OKLAHOMA CITY THAT NO LONGER EXISTS. IN A TIME WHEN MOST PEOPLE DID NOT HAVE TELEVISIONS YET, WE USED NATURE AS OUR RECREATION. THE NORTH CANADIEN RIVER WAS ONLY A BLOCK AWAY AND WE SWAM THERE ALL THE TIME. ONE YEAR "HUMP" AND I, ALOMG WITH OUR FRIEND CHEETAH, DECIDED TO BUILD A RAFT. WE TIED TREE LIMBS TOGETHER WITH ROPES AND STARTED OUR TREK. ABOUT FIFTY YARDS DOWN RIVER THE ROPES CAME ALOOSE AND SO DID THE RAFT. WE HAD TO JUMP INTO THE RIVER. CHEETAH AND HUMP WERE GOOD SWIMMERS. I WAS NOT. BUT WE ALL MADE IT TO THE SHORE AND WALKED BACK TO WALKER STREET. EVERY DAY WAS AN ADVENTURE IN SOUTHTOWN. THE FRISCO TRAIN STATION WAS ON 9TH STREET. HUMP AND I "HOPPED A FREIGHT" THERE ONE DAY AND JUMPED OFF DOWN BY WHEELER PARK. THE KIOWA TRIBE WAS THERE HAVING A POWWOW. THEY HAD DRUMS AND WERE WEARING INDIAN GARB. THEY WERE DANCING IN A SLOW TWO-STEP JUST LIKE IN THE MOVIES. AFTER A WHILE, I NOTICED A COMMOTION IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DANCERS.. I WENT OVER TO TAKE A LOOK. IT WAS HUMP. HE HAD JOINED THE DANCE LINE AND WAS OUT THERE DOING THE "BOOGIE". THE INDIANS HAD SURROUNDED HIM AND WERE LAUGHING. I JUMPED OUT AND STARTED DANCING TOO. WE "KICKED IT" WITH THEM UNTIL IT GOT TOO LATE. WE HAD A GOOD TIME THAT NIGHT. THEY HAD ACCEPTED US. WE HEADED HOME. THERE WERE A LOT OF GOOD ATHLETES IN SOUTHTOWN. HUMP AND I WERE ON THE TRACK TEAM. I WAS ON THE RELAY TEAM AND HE WAS A HIGH JUMPER. AT THE CITY TRACKMEET, I GOT HYPED UP AND RAN OUT OF MY LANE AND WE LOST THE RACE. HUMP DIDN'T DO WELL EITHER. WE WERE BOTH DEJECTED. COACH NEEDED SOMEBODY TO DO THE STANDING BROADJUMP. I DECLINED. HUMP VOLUNTEERED. TWENTY MINUTES LATER HE CAME BACK GRINNING. NOT ONLY HAD HE WON THE EVENT, BUT HE HAD SET A NEW CITY RECORD THAT WOULD NOT BE BROKEN FOR THE NEXT 30 YEARS. SOMEWHERE ALONG THE LINE, WE DECIDED TO BECOME BLOOD BROTHERS SO WE CUT OUR FINGERS AND MASHED THEM TOGETHER SO THAT THE BLOOD WOULD MIX. HE WAS A GOOD GUY AND I LOVED HIM DEARLY. AS AN ADULT, I IBECAME A RECLUSE. I HAD NOT SEEN HIM IN YEARS. I AM GLAD TO HEAR THAT HE HAD A GOOD FAMILY AND A GOOD LIFE. PERHAPS I WILL SE HIM ON THE OTHER SIDE.
